How to Choose a Cricket Bat: English vs Kashmir Willow
Walk into any sports shop and the wall of cricket bats can be overwhelming. The good news: once you understand a few basics, choosing the right one is simple. Here is what actually matters.
English willow vs Kashmir willow
English willow is the premium choice — softer, more responsive fibres that give better “ping” and middle. It is what most club and serious players use, and it carries a higher price. Kashmir willow is harder and heavier, more durable, and much friendlier on the wallet — ideal for beginners, tennis-ball cricket and practice. If you are starting out or mostly play casually, a good Kashmir willow bat is a smart buy. If you play with a leather ball regularly, step up to English willow.
Weight and pick-up
A bat that feels heavy in the shop feels twice as heavy at the crease. Most adult bats sit between 1.1 and 1.3 kg, but “pick-up” — how balanced it feels when you lift it — matters more than the number. Pick a bat you can hold up comfortably in your top hand; if your bottom hand is doing all the work, it is too heavy.
Grains and profile
Straight grains on the face are a sign of good willow, though grain count is not everything. A bigger edge and a lower “sweet spot” suit front-foot players on true pitches; a higher middle suits bouncier tracks. Do not over-think it early on — feel and weight beat cosmetics.
Get the size right
Juniors especially should play with the correct size (from size 0 up to Harrow and full Short-Handle for adults). An oversized bat ruins technique. When in doubt, ask us — we fit players across the counter every day.
