Batting Gloves and Pads: A Guide to Cricket Protection

July 20, 2026 · 1 min read

Good protective gear does two jobs: it keeps you safe, and — because you are not flinching — it lets you play freely. Here is how to choose the essentials.

Batting gloves

Look for a snug fit with a little room at the fingertips, sweat-wicking palm material, and good padding across the fingers and thumb (the parts that take the knocks). Try them with your bat grip on; the glove should let you wrap your fingers naturally. Left-hand and right-hand batters need the correct pair.

Batting pads (leg guards)

Pads should cover from just above the boot to above the knee roll without restricting your running. Lightweight high-density foam models protect well while staying light; check that the straps sit comfortably and do not dig in. Junior sizes matter — a pad that is too long slows a young player down.

Don’t skip the extras

  • Thigh guard / inner thigh pad — cheap insurance against a very common bruise.
  • Abdominal guard — non-negotiable for leather-ball cricket.
  • Helmet — a properly fitted helmet with a fixed grille is essential against a hard ball, at every level.
