How to Choose Swimming Goggles: Fit, Lenses and Anti-Fog

July 11, 2026 · 1 min read

Nothing ruins a swim like goggles that leak or fog. The right pair simply disappears once you push off the wall. Here is what to look for.

Fit is everything

Press the goggles gently to your eyes without the strap. If they suction and hold for a moment, the seal fits your face. The strap only keeps them in place — it should never be doing the sealing job (over-tightening is the usual cause of red rings and leaks).

Lens tint

  • Clear — indoor pools and low light.
  • Smoke / tinted — bright indoor light and general use, cuts glare.
  • Mirrored — outdoor and sunny open water, reduces brightness the most.

Anti-fog and gaskets

Most goggles ship with an anti-fog coating — avoid wiping the inside of the lens, which rubs it off. Silicone gaskets are softer and seal better than foam for regular swimming. For training, a comfortable low-profile pair beats a racing model.

Caps and care

Rinse in fresh water after every swim and air-dry them; chlorine and sun are what age goggles fastest. Pair them with a silicone cap for less drag. See our TYR goggles, caps and training gear.
